Echo

Audio

My Lord, I feel like March’s song just took forever and a day to finish! This probably has something to do with my daughter having both strep throat and spring break this month and also having migraines and sinus problems myself. But, it’s finished, I like it, and it’s time to move on to the next one. (Yay!)

(Go straight to lyrics.)

I also changed some things up with this song, which probably added some time investment to the whole thing. The last two songs I constructed are ones that I wrote quite a while ago, without considering making electronic arrangements around them. This one I wrote for this project. Another change is I didn’t use any pre-tracked midi clips on the drums this time, instead going for a more programmed sound. The beat is very simple and repetitive, but I like how it works with the overall theme of the lyrics. Despite there being plenty bass frequencies on this track, there’s not really a clearly defined bass sound… just a bunch of messy distorted tones that build up in the chorus and never really go anywhere, sort of reflecting the meaning of the lyrics. This was not really intentional, but that’s how it struck me as I finished it up… so… whatever, I’ll take it. I felt like this one was really tough to mix, but that might be mostly due to headaches diminishing my cognitive clarity. At any rate, the loosely defined concepts I had on the outset for what I’d do with this arrangement lead me to experiment a lot in an attempt to craft the sounds I had in mind, but ultimately I discovered sounds I hadn’t originally imagined and chose those instead. I was particularly pleased with the odd little vocal effects made with a vocoder and some envelopes. I took those vocals apart and redid them  few times before I picked the version you get hear. I think I’ll be playing around with that technique a lot more in the future.

There’s a lot I hope to do in the next couple months, including changing some things around on this site with more updates on my progress as I work on each song, but right now I’m having a hard time finding enough of me to go around. (Lol) Right now I have about a bazillion photographs that need cataloguing waiting on my hard drive and SD cards, plus I need to get all my song stuff organized on  my hard drive too. So, there probably won’t be another song out for another six weeks.

Anyway, Here’s the lyrics…

Think that you can measure the weight of the world
by how it fits between your ears
you understand it as well as it needs you to
It’s all so perfectly clear
Your angle is objective on all that you’ve read
but you don’t always follow
You’re not easily lead
C’mon now, feed your head
with the echo

(Chorus)

The world that you experience
in only two dimensions
see your reflection
feel the feedback echo

The world that you experience
in only sights and sounds
hear it all around
feel the feedback echo

The world’s got problems you know you can solve ’em
when you get a little confirmation
that’s easy to do you just tune into what they’re saying
on the same old station
but talk is cheap
with the high cost of living
and all you can afford is to hold your position
around and around round it goes
echoes

(Chorus)

The world that you experience
in only two dimensions
see your reflection
feel the feedback echo

The word that you experience
in only sights and sounds
hear it all around
feel the feedback echo
